The latest agreement signed by China FAW and Volkswagen Group in Germany has brought the strategic cooperation between the two parties to a new level of mutual creation and win-win, and will strive to create a new benchmark of "oil-electric hybrid progress" and "oil-electric hybrid full intelligence" in the joint venture field.
It is understood that this strategic cooperation agreement jointly determines FAW-Volkswagen's new model planning. From 2026, FAW-Volkswagen's Volkswagen brand and Jetta brand will add 11 new models tailored for the Chinese market, including 6 pure electric models, 2 plug-in hybrid models, 2 extended-range models and 1 fuel model.
There are three key points worth noting in this cooperation agreement.
First, the Volkswagen brand new energy products planned this time will introduce electric platforms such as the new CMP (Compact Main Platform) developed locally by the Volkswagen Group, and will be equipped with a new electronic and electrical architecture CEA (China Electronic Architecture) to accelerate FAW-Volkswagen's intelligent electric transformation and upgrading.
It is reported that in the compact car market, FAW-Volkswagen will launch two pure electric models based on the CMP platform. These two models will be equipped with high-performance CEA electronic and electrical architecture, bringing advanced digital services and advanced autonomous driving assistance functions to customers.
Second, FAW-Volkswagen will play a leading role in the joint development of hybrid powertrains. It is reported that FAW-Volkswagen will build two plug-in hybrid models for the first time by leveraging the high flexibility of the CMP platform to meet the rapidly growing market demand for hybrid models.
Third, FAW-Volkswagen will be deeply involved in the definition and development of localized products and will assume more development responsibilities. It is understood that FAW-Volkswagen will promote the electrification process of the Jetta brand and propose intelligent solutions for the Jetta brand. The first Jetta brand pure electric model will be equipped with FAW-Volkswagen SOA electronic and electrical architecture and will be launched in 2026.
In addition, a new model of FAW-Volkswagen based on the MEB platform will also achieve a comprehensive intelligent upgrade through CEA.
In the mid-size car market, FAW-Volkswagen will launch two pure electric models and their extended-range versions based on the Volkswagen Group's future advanced platform, simultaneously meeting consumers' demand for long battery life and electric travel experience.
By 2030, FAW-Volkswagen's various brands will launch more than 20 new models based on the strategies of "hybrid and electric vehicles advancing together" and "hybrid and electric vehicles fully intelligent".
"This signing is also an important milestone for FAW-Volkswagen to practice high-quality development and high-level opening up." Chen Bin, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of China FAW Group Corporation, deputy general manager and director, party secretary and general manager of FAW-Volkswagen, said, "Today, the global automotive industry is facing major opportunities and challenges. Chinese and German shareholders will continue to uphold a global vision, rely on more than 30 years of cooperation, coordinate strategies, create and advance together, accelerate the construction of a new quality productivity ecosystem, deeply integrate global wisdom with local technology, promote the long-term sustainable development of FAW-Volkswagen in the future, and meet consumers' diversified travel needs with new products that are more competitive, more in line with the local market and provide a better smart travel experience."
According to Peter Barreder, managing director of Volkswagen Group's business in China and chairman and CEO of Volkswagen Group (China), the Volkswagen brand has won the favor of more than 40 million customers in China. Through this strategic layout, the brand will further improve its product matrix by 2030 and consolidate its leading position in the Chinese market.
At present, the Volkswagen brand's future product roadmap has been fully implemented. The group plans to launch about 40 new models between 2025 and 2027, more than half of which will be electrified products, to accelerate the transformation and upgrading of electric mobility.
